The closest geographically has been the competition with the New York Jets. The Patriots and Jets have been in the exact same division (what’s now the AFC East) since both teams’ foundings in 1960, and have played each other at least twice a year ever since then. Six years after that, an assistant under Belichick, Eric Mangini, became the head coach of the Jets.

Bill Belichick attained his 200th career head coaching win (regular season and playoffs) on November 22, 2012, conquering the Jets 49–19; it was his 163rd such win as Patriots trainer.[19] The Patriots defeated the Jets in Week 7 of the 2015 season by a score of 30–23, to give them a 6–0 record to date.

With Mangini, and Parcells, Carroll, Belichick acting as coaches on both teams from 1993 through 2008, at least 50 players were additionally with both teams in precisely the same period. Pepper Johnson was a player with the Jets under Parcells and functioned as a defensive line coach for the Patriots under Belichick and in 2015 serves in that capacity for the Jets. Mangini hired former Jets and Patriots players Bryan Cox and Rick Lyle to his coaching staff, together with former Patriot Sam Gash, and kept former Patriots assistant strength and conditioning coach Markus Paul upon becoming Jets head coach in 2006. Former Patriots wide receivers coach Brian Daboll spent seven seasons with the Patriots before leaving to become the Jets’ quarterbacks coach in 2007 and in 2013 returned to the Patriots, becoming tight ends coach in 2014. When Daboll left for the Cleveland Browns with Mangini, former Patriots quarterback Matt Cavanaugh was named as Jets quarterbacks coach; paradoxically, in his playing days with the Patriots, Cavanaugh was 0 – 2 against the Jets. Corwin Brown worked in the 2010 season on the Patriots staff.

Connections between the two teams predated the Parcells-Belichick eras. Mike Holovak trained the then-Boston Patriots 196168, going 5–10–1 against the Jets; he joined the Jets front office and in the 1976 season finale (a 42–3 rout by the Cincinnati Bengals) was named interim head coach, replacing Lou Holtz. Paradoxically, sixteen years after Holovak had to break up a fight between two assistant coaches as Houston Oilers GM, when the Oilers defeated the Jets in the 1993 season finale.
